Teak Grading Rule

Teak wood is highly valued for its durability, beauty, and versatility. To ensure quality and consistency, it is essential to adhere to standardized grading rules. The following grading criteria outline the classification of teak wood based on its appearance and structural integrity:

Grade A - Premium Grade

  • Appearance: Clear, uniform color with minimal defects. Exhibits a smooth, consistent grain pattern.
  • Defects: Free from knots, cracks, and discoloration.
  • Usage: Ideal for high-end furniture, luxury interiors, and fine cabinetry.

Grade B - Select Grade

  • Appearance: Good color consistency with some natural variations in grain and hue. Slightly varied grain pattern.
  • Defects: May contain small knots or minor blemishes, but these do not affect the structural integrity.
  • Usage: Suitable for quality furniture, cabinetry, and decorative woodwork.

Grade C - Standard Grade

  • Appearance: Noticeable color and grain variations. May include more prominent grain patterns and natural features.
  • Defects: May contain knots, small cracks, and other imperfections, which are generally cosmetic.
  • Usage: Used for functional applications where appearance is secondary, such as construction and structural elements.

Grade D - Utility Grade

  • Appearance: Significant color variation and visible grain inconsistencies. May have more substantial defects.
  • Defects: Includes larger knots, cracks, and other imperfections that may affect appearance but not necessarily structural integrity.
  • Usage: Best for utilitarian purposes where structural strength is the priority over visual appeal.

Specifications:
No pith or cracks.
4 to 6 sound knots allowable per side.
95% heartwood on one side; 75% heartwood on the other side.

The Quarter System

The quarter system denotes the rough thickness of a board in 1/4″ increments. Rough thickness is the board’s thickness before it has been surfaced or planed. For instance, a 4/4 board was originally 1″ thick before surfacing.
